The US Commerce Department estimates that 30% of business failures are due to employee theft and embezzlement. The following article discusses this problem and offers some suggestions for decreasing your risk.
Managing your money does not happen by accident. Like so many other aspects of our lives, we need to be intentional and thoughtful in how we feel about money, how we think about money, and how we use our money. This can be difficult as a single person and equally difficult in a marriage. I have written a two month plan which seeks to help you organize different aspects of your financial life. It is broken into weekly tasks. The objective is to break financial chores into small steps and get you thinking about how to make your finances less stressful.
One of the tasks is to plan a half day or weekend retreat with your spouse for the purpose of taking about what is important to each partner and making some decisions and setting financial goals.
Dorothy Whitman, who is a financial planner with Ameriprise, has written a proposed half day agenda for such a retreat. You can use this agenda to help you and your spouse talk about your money.
